THE STATION

To be published in 2026 by Ugly Hill Press

Wellington Railway Station, one of New Zealand’s greatest aesthetic, architectural, and structural buildings, hides its treasures in plain sight.

Yet since 1937 when The Station’s grand opening took place, not one book has been produced dedicated solely to this ‘Temple of Transport’, as it was originally dubbed. Bruce Foster’s contemporary photographs, taken over 18 months, along with archive images, plus legendary images by Ans Westra pay tribute to Wellington’s grandest building.

Wellington writer Redmer Yska’s essay highlights The Station’s history and describes both luxurious and essential services whose loss today is much lamented.
